Yang set out to the west again with hardly enough light to show the way. The sun gradually came up behind him as he walked, and it was over his head before he stopped and plucked a pear from someone’s tree. By the time he came to the river, the sun was in his eyes.

He turned right and followed the river to the north, tilting his hat to the left side of his face to better block the sunlight. It was anything but a straight path, twisting as it did toward the mountains that loomed one moment in front of Yang, the next to his left, and the next to his right.

He reached the mountains and the twist of the river grew more pronounced as it weaved through the valleys. The sun’s light deepened in color, the eastern sky growing steadily dark.

Without a house in sight, Yang resigned himself to sleeping under the stars in the chilly night air. Just as he was about to make a fire, he caught a glimpse of one that already burned.

Only as he walked in the direction of this hopeful beacon did he make out the tiny rustic hut at the foot of a mountain, the open door allowing him the view which had caught his attention. Soon he realized the flame he saw came from an oil lamp. In ten minutes he reached the doorway to see, sitting by the lamp warming his hands, the old man.
